California-Victory Park

West Louisville has been the subject of several urban renewal efforts. A new YMCA and $25 million Wal-Mart Supercenter in the California neighborhood should help. As does the Brown-Forman Corporation, whose headquarters and warehouse is located in the neighborhood.

Nearby neighborhoods include Parkland, Chickasaw and Victory Park, which are Frederick Law Olmsted-designed parks. Other area attractions include Muhammad Ali's Boyhood Home on Grand Ave., as well as  many delicious locally owned soul food and barbecue restaurants.

Southwest of downtown sits Park DuValle, a neighborhood reflecting the principles of New Urbanism (similar to the East End's Norton Commons). The Park DuValle neighborhood was once dominated by 1,100 public housing units. Today, it is a mixed-income neighborhood, attractive to a broad cross-section of residents.
